Perhaps it’s premature to write up a review of John Murillo’s Up Jump the Boogie; I am on page 74, and the last page of poetry in this collection is page 87. Still, as I have been thinking about poetic traditions, and where within these we as authors of color place ourselves, it’s appropriate to offer my thoughts here. I’ve previously cited Murillo on this blog, as he discusses craft, process, and poetic form, believing in the honor which comes with being a member of the sacred tradition of the guild.
