MANY VOICES ONE VISION / MUCHAS VOCES UNA VISION said...

Dear Francisco: I hope your ONE POEM FESTIVAL at AWP goes well. On March 28, 2010, we did a collective benefit poetry reading for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti and Chile at La Peña in Berkeley. We called this reading MUCHAS VOCES/ONE VISIÓN•MANY VOICES/ONE VISION, and it was drawn on the FLORICANTO tradition of including poetry and music. In three and a half hours we had more than 30 Bay Area poets sharing their poems, voices, souls, and hearts in solidarity with the people of Haiti and Chile. The poetry reading really worked out incredibly well, it was moving, heartfelt, refreshing, provoking; a community building event the went very smoothly. Groups of seven poets came to to stage to read for 5 minutes max. It was intergenerational and multicultural. It included emerging poets as well as well-established ones like a former Poet Laureate of California as well as Poet Laureates of many locations in Northern California. The audience loved it. An on top of all, we were able to raise about $1,100 dollars in donations for worthy couses. I wish you the best on April 9 in Denver, Colorado. Muchos saludos, Francisco X. Alarcón
