In Praise of Cities

The last time I lived and worked in one was five years ago.

The summer of 2002 I lived on Ludlow just below Houston, a few doors down from Katz.

Mornings I'd take twenty to get to Fifth just above Washington Square to settle in as an assistant.

I loved walking the Village on my break. And at five, stepping out of the building into the swelter, I loved looking right and being able to see it in the distance. The Empire State Building.

Today at noon it was Dupont Circle and into Kramerbooks. I bit the bullet and finally decided to buy The McSweeney's Book of Poets Picking Poets.

In short, it's feels right to be back in one.

I'll get back on topic before I head to Macondo on Saturday.
